How to Dress Modestly in Summer

Seasonal ·

Hot days and full coverage can go together. Fabric, fit and color choices that help you stay comfortable and put-together when the temperature climbs.

Summer asks more of a modest wardrobe than any other season. The good news: a few smart choices make a big difference to how you feel by the end of a long day.

Choose natural, airy fabrics

Linen, cotton voile, lawn and lightweight viscose let air move and feel soft against the skin. Heavier synthetics tend to trap warmth, so save them for cooler evenings.

Go loose, not tight

A relaxed fit lets air circulate. Look for flowing maxi dresses, wide-leg trousers, kaftans and loose shirts. A garment that skims the body rather than clinging to it is both cooler and more comfortable.

Lighter colors

White, cream, sand, sage and pale blue reflect light and feel fresh. If you love darker colors, try them in the lightest fabric weights.

A single lightweight layer is often cooler than a thick one: think an unlined linen abaya over a cotton slip dress.

Hijabs for warm weather

Cotton, modal and fine jersey hijabs are breathable and stay in place. Chiffon is light too, but an underscarf in a breathable fabric keeps it comfortable.

Shoes and accessories

  • Open, cushioned sandals or breathable canvas shoes
  • A wide-brimmed hat worn over the hijab for shade
  • A light tote rather than a structured bag that sits against your body
  • Sunglasses with UV protection

Plan around the heat

Run errands in the morning or evening when you can, and carry water. Keep a light layer in your bag, too; air-conditioned spaces can be surprisingly cold.

Final thoughts

Summer style is about ease. Pick fabrics you love to wear, keep the shapes relaxed, and let the season set the pace.
