Face Shape & Hijab Style Guide
Styling ·
The way a hijab frames your face can change the whole look. A simple guide to finding your face shape and the wraps that tend to suit it.
There are no rules here, only starting points. The style you love is always the right one; this guide simply helps when you want to try something new.
Finding your face shape
Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. Notice where your face is widest (forehead, cheekbones or jaw) and whether it is longer than it is wide. Most faces lean toward one of the shapes below.
Oval
Balanced proportions mean almost any wrap works. Try a loose drape to show off the shape, or a structured wrap with a defined front edge.
Round
Wraps that add a little height at the crown and fall in a V at the chin lengthen the face. Avoid wrapping too tightly at the cheeks; a softer frame is more flattering.
Square
A strong jaw is beautifully softened by gentle folds at the sides of the face. Loose drapes and side-swept styles work well, as do rounded, slightly fuller wraps.
Heart
With a wider forehead and a narrower chin, styles that add volume around the lower face create balance. Try a fuller wrap at the neck, or a scarf with pleats gathered at the chin.
Long
Add width rather than height. Keep the top flat, and let the fabric sit a little fuller at the sides. A wrap that sits lower on the forehead also shortens the face visually.
Fabric matters as much as shape: jersey hugs the face, chiffon floats around it and cotton sits somewhere in between.
Final thoughts
Try two or three wraps in front of a mirror with good light, and take photos. You will often see straight away which one feels right.
